The best way to capture someone’s attention after the sun goes down is with light. No one wants to strain to make out a logo obscured by dusk, and no one’s head is going to be turned by a storefront that fades into backdrop of evening. That’s why so many businesses use illuminated signs.

What are illuminated signs?
Illuminated signs are graphics that are lit from the inside. They can be fashioned into a wide variety of images that use complementary designs and colours. These illuminated signs contain LED lights that shine through coloured acrylic facing, ensuring the sign is visible any time of day.
Illuminated signs are often affixed to buildings, such as strip malls and medical institutions, but can also be used as freestanding signs that are removed from a physical structure.
Types of illuminated signs
As is the case with the majority of outdoor signs, illuminated signs can be crafted into a variety of shapes, sizes, colours and designs. Further still, illuminated signs offer an additional level of customization, thanks to their internal lighting element. Below are explanations for, and examples of, the main types of illuminated business signs.
LED lit signs
The most common type of illuminated sign is front lit. By projecting light through the outward facing dimension of the sign, the entire surface is illuminated. This enables different parts of the sign to display in different colours, based on the colour of the vinyl used for each part of the facing. A similar style of illumination can be used for letter signs, which can alternatively be halo lit.
Check out some examples of illuminated signs below.
Externally lit signs
Most illuminated signs we create use internal LED lights. However, a similar effect can be accomplished by illuminating a business sign with an external light source. For example, using gooseneck lights that shine on the sign is one possible alternative to internal illumination. Here’s an example (note that the storefront sign on the left is the one using external illumination, while the freestanding pylon sign on the right is lit internally with LED lights).
Unlit sign boxes
An unlit sign box is just as it sounds – a sign without a light source. This type of outdoor sign is more or less the same as its illuminated counterparts in every other way, the obvious downside being that it’s much less noticeable when it’s dark or visibility is poor. You can learn more about non-illuminated sign boxes here.
The benefits of illuminated signs
Illuminated signs may seem simple, however, they represent a cost-effective way to attract customers to your building. Though people may not mentally register every sign they pass while driving down the street, an illuminated sign that stands out at night is far more likely to make an impression, or even serve as some sort of landmark. So even if a person doesn’t immediately come to your store, they’re at least likely to remember you exist, and may turn into a customer sometime down the road.
High-quality, custom illuminated signs, like the ones About Signs makes, have the durability to withstand the rigours of the harsh Canadian winters, allowing them to adorn your storefront for decades. Coupled with the use of energy-efficient, long-lasting LED lights, this type of outdoor sign is a truly long-term investment.
Who uses illuminated signs?
Illuminated business signs can be shaped into your company logo. It doesn’t really matter which industry you’re in; if you want a storefront sign that grabs people’s attention, a custom illuminated sign box is a great choice.
Illuminated signs can also be used indoors to create an interesting aesthetic – like neon, but longer lasting and more energy efficient – but they’re most commonly affixed to the exterior of a building or a freestanding structure in front of the building.
